Westminster Abbey is an architectural masterpiece of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries. The Abbey has its origin in a Benedictine monastery, which was greatly enlarged by Edward the Confessor. The church was consecrated in 1065 and since 1066 has been the place for every Coronation and for numerous other Royal occasions.

Richard Jenkyns: Well so much of the history of Westminster Abbey is a matter of accident. After the monastery was dissolved, it was just for a while, just another large London church, and people were buried there as they might be buried in other churches. So people were just kind of ordinary ladies and gentlemen, and even people, a few people, more humble than that, just got themselves buried. And then it developed in the 17th and even more in the 18th century, it evolved into being a Valhalla or Pantheon for the eminent dead, and so you get this I think rather moving combination of the fact it's a burial place of kings, and it's a burial place of the great and it has been a burial place of the pretty ordinary as well. All mixed up together.

Westminster Abbey has survived them all. It's an architectural masterpiece of the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries and contains countless memorials and effigies to the famous and great of this nation. Over three thousand people are either buried or memorialised in Westminster Abbey from Medieval Kings and their Queens, to the tomb of the Unknown Warrior, which in recent times has become a place of pilgrimage.

Westminster Abbey, founded by Edward the Confessor, was consecrated on December 28, 1065. The setting for every Coronation since that of William the Conqueror in 1066, the building was mostly completed between the 13th and 16th centuries. While the Abbey is renowned for its Coronations and other Royal occasions, continuous daily worship has been offered for over nine hundred years.

Westminster Abbey was reconstructed in Gothic style between 1245 and 1517. The eastern portion was completed in 1269 and the nave completed around 1505. The famous western towers were finished in the mid 18th century.
