Other exploitable resources in Western Pennsylvania were ... distinct. One was the drilling of the first oil well in the world at Titusville and the rise of the US petroleum industry. Another was wide-spread deforestation of the outlying areas and their subsequent reforestation under Gifford Pinchot, who instituted the first large scale government sponsored timber management effort in the USA. During this time of intensive exploitation of forests a whole new sector, the wood chemistry industry, appeared and then later vanished. Finally, mention should also be made of management in the forested areas of a large animal population which supports the famous "Pennsylvania deer-hunting" cultural ethos. Indeed, the first day of deer-hunting season is a de facto unofficial holiday in much of the central and northern regions of the state, when absence from work or school is generally tolerated with no explanation necessary.
The Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend returned in 2007 to the Comfort Inn Pittsburgh North from October 5 to 7. It attracted 92 attendees, 24 of which were fursuiters. 2007 ... introduced the Western Pennsylvania Furry Weekend's first Midnight Menagerie, which attracted 8 acts. The featured artist was Brendan Roo and Animal Friends was again the benefiting charity, which received $657 in donations from con-goers.[4]

Western Pennsylvania (not to be confused with Pennsyltucky) is considered by some to be the heart, soul, stomach, and/or lower intestine of the United States. It consists (or consisted, before the formation and relocation of the Independent Constitutional Monarchy of Pennsylvania) of the basic western half of the state, generally from around Punxsutawney to Cleveland. It is watered by several oddly-named rivers, the most prominent of which being the Monongahela, the Allegheny, the Youghiogheny, the Chuck Noll Memorial River, and the Yangtze (from which is dervived the name of a popular dice game).
