For almost six weeks the nurses at Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) hospitals in Kentucky and West Virginia have been on the picket line to gain better care for their patients at great personal cost. The 700 nurses, members of the United American Nurses (UAN), have been on strike at nine ARH hospitals in Kentucky and West Virginia since Oct. 1. The nurses are concerned that management’s staffing decisions and rampant mandatory overtime are preventing them from giving patients the best possible care. In contract negotiations, ARH is proposing modest pay raises but then is demanding to cut holiday pay and increase health care premiums, effectively wiping out the raises.

It's often called the "Mountain State", being the only state in the USA to lie completely within a mountain range (in this case, the Appalachians). The area which became West Virginia furnished about an equal number of soldiers to the Federal and Confederate governments[11], approximately 22-25,000 each. The Wheeling government found it necessary in 1865 to strip voting rights from returning Confederates. James Ferguson, who proposed the law, said that if it was not enacted he would lose election by 500 votes.[17] The property of Confederates might be confiscated, and in 1866 a constitutional amendment disfranchising all who had given aid and comfort to the Confederacy was adopted. The addition of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution caused a reaction, the Democratic party secured control in 1870, and in 1871, the constitutional amendment of 1866 was abrogated. The first steps toward this change had been taken... by the Republicans in 1870. On August 22, 1872, an entirely new constitution was adopted.

West Virginia became the 35th state in the US on this date in 1863. It had broken away from Virginia two years earlier, during the US Civil War, protesting the decision of Virginia's government to secede from the Union. Located in Appalachia, the state is mountainous throughout and carries the nickname "The Mountain State." The Golden Delicious apple was first discovered in Clay County, WV, and it became the official state fruit.
