West Germany: Western Allies
built 277 days ago
West Germany took on Austria in the semi finals, from their incredible quarter final against the hosts. The Austrians understandably switched their keeper from one who had allowed in five; yet his substitute, Walter Zeman, had previously been dropped due that he was out of form. A nervous defence, an off-form goalkeeper who then proceeded to prove he was off-form by a many of disastrous misses set the stage for a calamitous 6-1 defeat for a side that would usually been expected to win against West Germany.
The democratic government of West Germany allocated significant financial support to a broad range of artistic endeavors. Among the institutions that received subsidies from the Bonn government were some 600 museums, 370 important libraries, 60 opera houses, 200 other theaters, and 80 major orchestras. Departing from the princely precedent, the government generally exercised little or no control over the activities of these organizations and the artists they employed.

The first official anthem adopted by West Germany after founding in 1949 was the "Hymn an Deutschland". The "Lied der Deutschen" that was often used in Germany was probably avoided at this time due to the recent misuse of the anthem by the Nazi party (and the subsequent ban on the anthem by the Allied powers for the years following). The anthem proved to be unpopular with the people... possibly due to the similarity of a church hymn.

Richard von Weizsäcker served two 5-year-terms, from 1984 to 1994 Kiesinger's 1966–69 "Grand Coalition" was between West Germany's two largest parties, the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party (SPD). This was important for the introduction of new emergency acts—the Grand Coalition gave the ruling parties the two-thirds majority of votes required to see them in. These controversial acts allowed basic constitutional rights such as freedom of movement to be limited in case of a state of emergency.
