During the period of the 1970s and 80s, West Germany could not send the professional national team to the Olympic Games, but only young players with amateur status. They achieved some success, most notably in the 1988 Olympics, when they won the bronze medal, while ... reaching the Second Round in both 1972 and 1984.

Schooling in West Germany was compulsory and free for persons between the ages of 6 and 18. Schools were controlled by individual state governments, but national groups ensured that school systems and requirements were roughly equal throughout the nation. Children began with four years at a Grundschule (basic school), then continued their education at one of three institutions: a Hauptschule (senior school), which generally led to a Berufsschule, or commercial/business school; a Realschule, which generally led to a Fachoberschule, or vocational college; or a Gymnasium, which generally led to a university such as the renowned Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg, founded in 1386. Qualified students were permitted to change courses during their school careers. This same system of education continued, with very few changes, after the reunification of Germany in 1990.

A new prize awaited the eventual winners of the ninth World Cup - hosted in West-Germany - after FIFA handed over the original Jules Rimet trophy to Brazil in honour of their third World Cup triumph in 1970. The old, solid gold 12-inch statue was replaced by a new, solid gold 12-inch statue, this time called the 'FIFA World Cup.'

It is difficult to exaggerate the impact of the program: the five power plants built and installed by West Germany between 1953 and 1956 quadrupled Israel's electric-power-generating capacity. West Germans laid 280 kilometers of giant pipelines (2.25 and 2.5 meters in diameter) for the irrigation of the Negev (which certainly helped to "make the desert bloom").
