Welding: Equipment
built 622 days ago
Electric shock is a hazard with electric resistance and electric arc welding. A shock can happen because the equipment isn't properly grounded, or from contact with the current by moist gloves or clothing, damp floors or humid air. Even if the shock itself isn't too serious, the jolt could throw a welder out of position causing major injuries. A fairly minor slag burn could ... startle a worker just long enough to lose balance and fall. Safety belts or lifelines should always be used when welding in high places and wherever a slip or fall could be dangerous.

As most regional welding markets are in some ways limited to grow, it is relevant for firms to broaden their vision of the business and start considering opening their scope on a regional basis. The main welding applications per country are always only two on average and their growth is what drives growth in the welding market. The growth is mainly a product of economic growth that is generally not sustained across time. Furthermore, consumers are becoming more aware of the advantages of high-tech welding equipment while increasing their purchasing power in many countries. At the same time, they are ... being more demanding in terms of quality of products and services offered.

Energy beam welding methods, namely laser beam welding and electron beam welding, are relatively new processes that have become quite popular in high production applications. The two processes are quite similar, differing most notably in their source of power. Laser beam welding employs a highly focused laser beam, while electron beam welding is done in a vacuum and uses an electron beam. Both have a very high energy density, making deep weld penetration possible and minimizing the size of the weld area. Both processes are extremely fast, and are easily automated, making them highly productive. The primary disadvantages are their very high equipment costs (though these are decreasing) and a susceptibility to thermal cracking.

Valley National Gases, with headquarters in Wheeling, West Virginia, is a leading packager and distributor of industrial, medical and specialty gases, welding equipment and supplies, propane and fire equipment. Valley operates sixty locations in ten states, with seven production and distribution centers in the mid-Atlantic and mid-western regions of the United States. With this acquisition, Valley will have completed six acquisitions in the last eighteen months having combined annual sales of approximately $26 million. Valley's sales for the twelve months ended March 31, 2001 were $141 million, an increase of 17% over the same period last year. This acquisition will bring Valley's total number of locations to sixty-eight, in eleven states.Â

Production welding efficiency audits, equipment monitoring and calibration services. Non-destructive weld inspection services available by contract. X-ray, Liquid Penetrant Inspection and Magnetic Particle. In the day to day production environment, inefficiencies in the welding shop often go unnoticed, undermining your profit lines. An audit will expose and correct problems resulting in increased production and quality. Costly re-work and repairs are reduced.

As an industrial process, the cost of welding plays a crucial role in manufacturing decisions. Many different variables affect the total cost, including equipment cost, labor cost, material cost, and energy cost. Depending on the process, equipment cost can vary, from inexpensive for methods like shielded metal arc welding and oxyfuel welding, to extremely expensive for methods like laser beam welding and electron beam welding. Because of their high cost, they are only used in high production operations. Similarly, because automation and robots increase equipment costs, they are only implemented when high production is necessary. Labor cost depends on the deposition rate (the rate of welding), the hourly wage, and the total operation time, including both time welding and handling the part.
