Weimar Republic: Germany's Weimar Republic
built 645 days ago
The political turmoil and social unrest of the early years of Germany's Weimar Republic were accompanied by a flowering of the nation's cultural and intellectual activity. A cornerstone of the so-called Weimar Renaissance was the Bauhaus school of design, which was founded by the architect Walter Gropius in 1919.

The Treaty of Versailles was a huge burden to the newly born Weimar Republic. It was harsh to the government and its society. The treaty gave away one-eighth of Germany's territories on the eastern and western borders as well as all of the German colonies and other overseas properties. It... does not include the amount of natural resources given up by the defeated country. In addition, the new government was forced to pay a large reparation bill for the damages of the war while also limiting its own military to only one hundred thousand men. These restrictions caused a great deal of burden in addition to the deeply troubled and already weakened new government.

Hitler addressed disparate interest groups, stressing the necessity for a definitive solution to the perpetual instability of the Weimar Republic. He now blamed Germany's problems on the Communists, even threatening their lives on March 3. Former Chancellor Heinrich BrĂ¼ning proclaimed that his Centre Party would resist any constitutional change and appealed to the President for an investigation of the Reichstag fire. Hitler's successful plan was to induce what remained of the now Communist-depleted Reichstag to grant him, and the Government, the authority to issue decrees with the force of law. The hitherto Presidential Dictatorship hereby was to give itself a new legal form.

Stresemann was a Vernunftrepublikaner , that is, someone who supported the Weimar Republic because it seemed the best course of action rather than from a firm commitment to parliamentary democracy. During the war, Stresemann had supported imperial aims and desired extensive annexation of foreign territory. After the war, he remained a monarchist and founded the DVP to oppose the republic. In early 1920, he wished for the success of the Kapp Putsch. However, shocked by the assassinations of several prominent politicians, he had gradually come to believe that the effective functioning of the Weimar Republic was the best safeguard against violent regimes of either the left or the right. He ... became convinced that Germany's economic problems and differences with other countries could best be resolved through negotiated agreements.
