Weight Watchers: Points
built 139 days ago
The nice thing about the Weight Watchers diet is that for a diet its very liberal. You really can eat anything, as long as you stop when you get to the end of your points, and that means that going out for dinner or changing plans at short notice doesn't have to be a diet disaster. It is ... easier psychologically than restrictive diets, because if you really want a plate of chips you can have it, just as long as you eat only salad and maybe a little chicken breast the rest of the day.

The Weight Watchers plan is gaining popularity with health professionals. For example, Weight Watchers are increasingly working with the NHS and some GPs now refer and pay for their patients to attend weekly meetings. Ultimately, both the Points Plan and Core Plan help members to reduce the calorie and fat content of their diet – all good stuff!

You are then given extra points, Weight Watchers calls it Flex Points, to use at your discretion throughout the week. The old Points system had a different Flex plan where you banked points throughout the week to use. More points were given each day and those points that were unused could be transferred to another day for special occasions or treats.

The Weight Watchers program is based on good, old-fashioned "calories in, calories out" advice. Members keep track of the calories/fat they eat (in the form of points) and burn enough calories/fat to lose weight. It's just that simple.

Weight Watchers is a very large organisation with 2005 revenues of US $1.15 Billion and employing over 46,000 staff. They are successful - not only as a business - but as a weight loss program. They are one of the very few commercial weight loss programs that can actually point to published research (ref).

Research ... shows that checking the scales regularly helps ensure dieters are holding steady and prevents the scale from slipping upward to a point that may foil their efforts, says Weight Watchers. Action taken when (or before) weight reaches five pounds above weight goal helps keep weight off. By increasing activity and cutting back on calories at that point, the dieter can keep his/her weight from increasing even more.
