Weight Loss Infomercials: Bodies

The Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology recently published a study out of the University of Guelph that examined the effects of a very-low-carbohydrate diet on weight loss and health in overweight women. Twenty women completed the eight-week trial that significantly reduced their daily carbohydrate intake (from 232 grams to 71 grams) and calories (from 1996 to 1366 calories/day), while protein and fat remained the same. The average weight loss was 11 pounds and body mass index decreased with a loss of 3.4% body fat. Systolic blood pressure significantly decreased by an average of nine mmHg and diastolic blood pressure ... went down by seven mmHg. Also, total cholesterol decreased, which was accounted for by a decrease in low- density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL or "bad" cholesterol) with no change in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL or "good" cholesterol). Total triglycerides were also greatly reduced, as was the ratio of triglyceride/HDL.

The subjects in Greenfield's weight loss camp photographs seem to be casualties of the ongoing war between thin and fat, beautiful and ugly. They have been taught to focus on their bodies as vehicles through which they will be judged. Their personalities, their senses of humor, their intelligence, and their senses of self-worth are encouraged to take a backseat to their physical appearances. The girls are no longer cheerful and bright, but what does it matter? They are now thin and beautiful, and society will embrace them because of that fact. They will no longer feel alienated from the media; they will no longer suffer the humiliation of being branded unworthy of idolization.

Pills, potions, and promises rule the day when it comes to weight loss! Infomercials and ads promise much but fail to deliver the goods. One thing is for certain and that is that there is a constant in all the battle of the bulge...the Energy Balance Equation. What’s that? Very simply, if you eat more calories than you burn, you will gain body fat and weight. If you burn more than you eat, you will lose body fat and weight.

It gives you major aches and pains, and it can be very embarrassing. If you believe the media, you think everybody who exercises loves it and has a body like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jane Fonda. In reality, exercise is not always fun and even people who do it regularly dont always love it. Then why subject yourself to the torture?
