Bitou bush. Photo: L Brodie/NPWS Weeds are problem plants. They invade natural ecosystems, reduce agricultural production, or threaten other species (plants and animals). Weeds are often introduced species, but they can ... be native species growing outside their natural range. Together with pest animals, weeds pose one of the most significant threats to biodiversity, after land clearing and habitat destruction.
Photo of weeds Weeds in Corn: Corn acreage has increased substantially in Mississippi over the last few years. For many Mississippi farmers, corn is a new crop. As a result of this crop shift, many farmers are faced with many of the same problem weeds, but must control them in an unfamiliar crop. Since much of the corn in Mississippi is grown close to cotton, and often the same equipment is used to spray both cotton and corn, many farmers are skeptical of using herbicides such as 2,4-D which can injure cotton. Fortunately, many weeds can be controlled with other herbicides early in the season. As fall approaches and corn begins to mature and dry for harvest, morningglories and other weeds take advantage of the available sunlight and resume growth at full speed. The 10 most common weeds in corn, in Mississippi are broadleaf signalgrass, annual morningglories, southern crabgrass, common cocklebur, johnsongrass, sicklepod, purple nutsedge, pigweeds, Pennsylvania smartweed, and goosegrass.

Weeds present difficulties, as they compete with cereal crops for water, light, and mineral nutrients. The infestation of annual seeds planted in a field may cause many weeds in that field for successive years. Charlock or wild mustard, wild oats, crouch grass, and other common weeds are disseminated by wind, water, and birds.

Weeds are defined as plants that grow out of place. They can be native to an area, brought in by a contaminant, or introduced as an ornamental plant. Like other plants, weeds sprout regularly; they come as annuals, biennials, and perennials.

-- Control the weeds: Weeds tend to do well when grass is stressed. Two to three weeks before the restoration process starts, kill the weeds. First, mow the grass and weeds and two days later apply a herbicide such as Spectracide(R) Weed Stop(R) 2x for Lawns (#98415, $7.47). Check herbicide labels before using, and select an appropriate chemical for the weed types and lawn type in your yard. -- Remove the weeds and dead grass: You can accomplish with a metal rake or by mowing your lawn as short as possible and catching the clippings, making mulch or compost. For extreme soil compaction, you may consider a core aerator.
