New phone service allows folks to see footage from home security cameras, nanny-cams and other webcams without hauling around a computer. Big Brother may turn out to be your little sister or even your best friend in the brave new world of mobile communications. A new service from the EarthCam online-camera network allows people to broadcast live video for others to view on Web-enabled cell phones. The idea is let folks see footage from their home security cameras, nanny-cams and other webcams without hauling around a computer. EarthCam Mobile (mobile.earthcam.com) requires camera owners to install special software on the computer a camera is plugged into, enabling the footage collected by the webcam to be beamed, live, to any compatible cell phone. Users can choose to make their webcam public or share its view only with designated friends.

"One out of six American adult internet users (16%) have gone online to view another person or a place via a web cam. That translates into roughly 21 million people who have viewed material on web cams. And on any given day, about two million internet users are checking out remote places or people by using webcams."
