SAN ANTONIO, May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Hurricane season is about to begin and Cingular Wireless wants consumers to be armed with the knowledge they need before a hurricane or severe weather hits. Consumers need to understand what to expect when they use their cell phones or other wireless devices during an emergency and what they can do to prepare. Cingular is offering consumers some simple tips to help maximize their wireless service during an emergency situation.

Two of the five satellites were launched in 1994 and 1995 and provided 24-hour monitoring and measurement of dynamic weather events in real time. A third, launched in 1997, served as backup and provided added coverage of severe weather. A fourth, GOES-L, was launched in 2000, and the last in the series, GOES-M, was launched in 2001. As a demonstration of the reliability and robust design of the SS/L-built GOES satellites, GOES-11 (named GOES-L before launch) was put into service in May 2006 after being stored on the ground for two years and stored on-orbit for six years.

"United's management made a feeble attempt to shift the blame to weather for what is becoming an annual debacle -- flight cancellations due to crew shortages when recovering from bad weather. United management seems to be continually surprised by these winter snowstorms which history shows occur with some regularity throughout the Midwest between November and April. Internally, a memo was sent out by one pilot flight office properly blaming the service meltdown on '...several winter weather events in the Midwest and heavily congested northeast corridor (that) have increased flight duty times, exhausted monthly maximum hours earlier than normal in the month and reduced available crew reserves.' The statement explicitly stated that the shortages were not the result of any pilot job action or excessive sick leave usage.
