Wayne Ferreira: South African
built 263 days ago
Wayne Ferreira made no attempt at delicacy. "I got screwed," the South African said of the overruled line call that helped turn the third-set tie-breaker and... his third-round match in Tim Henman's favour at Wimbledon.

Ferreira, 35, currently sits at No. 4 in the 2007 Champions Series rankings. He won 15 singles titles during his 17-year ATP career, which saw him reach the semifinals of the Australian Open in 1992 and 2003. A silver medalist in men’s doubles at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Ferreira played in a record 56 consecutive Grand Slam tournaments from 1991 to 2004. On the 2006 Outback Champions Series tour, Ferreira won in Houston defeating Magnus Larsson 7-5, 6-3 and reached the championship match in Memphis, losing to Larsson 6-3, 6-4. In March, 2007, the South African won the Outback Champions Series event in Naples, defeating Aaron Krickstein in the finals of The Oliver Group Champions Cup. Ferreira ... competed in Champions Cup Boston and Champions Cup Athens.

James Blake believes his season is back on track after a confident 6-1, 7-6(0) win over South African veteran Wayne Ferreira on Monday. Blake blitzed Ferreira in the first set and then took command of a second-set tie-break to advance to the second round. Blake improved to 24-19 on the year and 4-2 on the hard court season by defeating Ferreira, who won his 15th career title in Los Angeles two weeks ago.

In an era riddled with player injuries and characterized by depth, Ferreira, the lean and freckled South African with the lantern jaw, has managed to play in every major event since the 1991 Australian Open. He has played hurt and he has played sick. But despite his obvious talents, he has never played well enough under pressure to get past the semifinals at a Grand Slam event. Still, the record Tuesday is not a bad consolation prize, or for that matter, retirement present.

With a tremendous career, Wayne created history at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics by becoming the first South African to win an Olympic medal (bronze) in 32 years. He followed up at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics by reaching the Quarter-finals in both the singles and doubles events.
