Throughout the medieval period, Waterford was Ireland's second city after Dublin. In the 15th century Waterford repelled two pretenders to the English throne: Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck. As a result, King Henry VII gave the city its motto: Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia (Waterford remains the untaken city).
Waterford of the Carolinas is a lakefront community, lined with creeks and finger lakes which escort you in and lead you around with delightful surprises at every turn and bridge. Almost every homesite is on the water.
Waterford ... enjoys a considerable reputation for its chardonnay, a Platter five-star laureate whose stylistic antecedents are more European than New World. However, since fashion as well as habit have ordained that the importance of a Helderberg wine estate is determined more by the red wines than the whites, focus inevitably shifts to the property's premium reds. For some time now Arnold has been pondering and developing an icon wine to stake a claim for Waterford on the Olympus of South African wine. He has used for his model the two super-premium reds that are produced in small quantities for the annual auction of the Cape Winemakers Guild. One is what he calls "the Med blend" and is shiraz-dominated. The other is a cabernet-based Bordeaux blend.
The Tall Ships festival, held in Waterford in 2005, marked the start of the Tall Ships race of that year. The Suir river provided a perfect berthing location for the numerous tall ships that lined the north and south quays, for almost a week. The festival attracted in the region of 450,000 people to the city in what was the biggest event ever held in Waterford or the south east. On the 27th March, 2007, it was confirmed that Waterford will host the start of the Tall Ships race again in 2011.
Old city walls (Norman Extension), Waterford City. After stiff Irish resistance, Waterford, along with many other Irish settlements, was apparently abandoned by the Vikings at the beginning of the 10th century. But by 916 they were back in force, killing, plundering and taking the native Irish as slaves. Waterford was the first Irish centre to be re-occupied, and from his base here, Regnall (after whom Reginald's Tower is named?), waged war in England, becoming the first Norse ruler of York.
The main train station at Waterford City is Plunkett station. It is located across Edmund Rice bridge on the north side of the Suir. Waterford railway station opened on 26 August 1864.[28]
