The Washington Redskins' primary colors are burgundy and gold. They are one of the three NFL teams that primarily wear their white jerseys at home (the others being the Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins). The tradition of wearing white jerseys at home was started by Joe Gibbs when he took over as coach in 1981. Gibbs was an assistant for the San Diego Chargers in 1979 and 1980, and the Chargers wore white at home during the tenure of coach Don Coryell in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Joe Gibbs brought in all new personnel last season to turn this team into a playoff contender; ... the team failed to produce. The Washington Redskins hired Jim Zorn as their coach Saturday night, a surprise ending to a monthlong search for a replacement for Joe Gibbs. The Redskins initially hired Zorn, 54, on Jan. 26 to be their offensive coordinator, his highest coaching position until now. Zorn, a former quarterback who spent 9 of his 11 N.F.L. seasons (1976-85, '87) with Seattle, had been the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach since 2001.
