The Washington Nationals are a Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise based in Washington, D.C. The team is ... known by its nickname The Nats. The current Nationals team played in Montreal as the Montreal Expos before the 2005 season. When the Washington Senators moved to the Dallas/Fort Worth area, becoming the Texas Rangers, the team's relocation was the first in Major League Baseball since 1972.The franchise has the honor of becoming Washington's first in the National League since 1899. It was owned by Major League Baseball from 2002 until mid-2006. Under Theodre N.Lerner, a new ownership group was selected on May 3, 2006. The group formally took possession of the team on July 22, 2006.

Correcting an earlier item, Bill Ladson, of Nationals.MLB.com, reports Washington Nationals 1B Nick Johnson (leg) said he is ready to start playing in exhibition games. He said his leg is 100 percent and he has already been taking batting practice. Johnson said he wants to play everyday and would probably not accept being a bench player.

The Washington Nationals today announced the formation of a new Baseball Operations Minority Internship Program. Nationals President Stan Kasten, Vice President and General Manager Jim Bowden, and Assistant General Manager and Vice President Baseball Operations Mike Rizzo made the joint announcement.

The Washington Nationals were established as the Montreal Expos in 1969. After the 1994 strike, interest in the Expos in Montreal severely declined. The team moved to Washington in 2005 under the ownership of MLB and became the Nationals. The Nationals play in the NL East division. As a franchise the Expos/Nationals have no Championships and no Pennants.

Bill Ladson, of Nationals.MLB.com, reports the Washington Nationals are not close to signing 3B Ryan Zimmerman to a contract extension. According to Zimmerman's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, the Nationals are expected to automatically renew Zimmerman's contract before the March 11 deadline.
