Washington Nationals: Washington Post
built 262 days ago
The group of Washington Nationals who leave tonight for Pittsburgh and the post-all-star break portion of their season are little more than a ragtag bunch who have, by their manager's estimation, underachieved. The greatest possible shock, it would seem, would be if that group somehow overcame injuries and inconsistency to right itself and pull out of such a deep hole, currently 14 games under .500.
Al Kamen's "In the Loop" column in today's Washington Post leaks the new head of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the organization overseeing U.S. government funded civilian international broadcasting, notably DC-based Voice of America. Kamen doesn't mention that the current chairman is Kenneth Y. Tomlinson, who was forced out as head of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting amid charges of injecting (conservative) political bias into programming. Tomlinson, a former director of VOA in the 1980s and a close friend of Karl Rove, was cited in an inspector general report last year for misusing his BBG office, in part by conducting some of his horse breeding business on government time. "Moving On . . . James Glassman, television pundit, American Enterprise Institute scholar, former editor of Roll Call, former Washington Post columnist and author of books including our favorite -- "Dow 36,000: The New Strategy for Profiting From the Coming Rise in the Stock Market" -- is said to be getting the job of chairman of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, a part-time -- but time-consuming -- gig overseeing the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, the Middle East Broadcasting Networks and the Cuba broadcasting operation."

The Washington Post's Barry Svrluga reports Washington Nationals minor league P Katsuhiko Maekawa remains in Japan because of visa problems, according to Nationals manager Manny Acta. His visa may be held up by two-year-old charges in a hit-and-run accident. He might not join the club as a result.
