Washington Mutual and ESPN have launched the ESPN Total Access Visa Card and they're calling it "the most comprehensive affinity credit card for sports fans ever." The card allows fans to earn rewards tied to their enthusiasm for sports, and "provides unique access to a wide range of sporting events and VIP experiences that only ESPN can provide."

Washington Mutual socked away $967 million in the third quarter to prepare for borrowers defaulting on their debt, mostly mortgages and credit card loans. The reserve is nearly six times bigger than the provision in the same quarter last year.

Some analysts expressed concern that Providian's customers will boost overall higher default risks for Washington Mutual, particularly as consolidation in the credit-card sector leads to stiffer competition and tighter margins. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice against Washington Mutual, Inc. (WaMu). The complaint alleges that WaMu refused to allow a deaf individual to apply for a credit card when calling through a video relay service (VRS); a WaMu supervisor allegedly said that WaMu policy is not to accept credit card applications made through VRS calls.
