Washington Monument: White House
built 440 days ago
The Washington Monument is one of the many famous images of Washington DC. The 550 feet high Egyptian obelisk, visible from almost anywhere in the city, stands opposite the White House in the National Mall. As the largest masonry structure in the world, the view from the top is breathtaking and allows those who take the minute long elevator ride to see all of the city and, on a clear day, much of Virginia and Maryland. On weekends, tour guides will walk groups down the original stairs, describing the lengthy and eventful construction of Americas favorite monument.
-The Washington Monument: The centerpiece of any Independence Day celebration in the capital, the white marble shaft recently emerged from a web of scaffolding installed as part of an exterior and interior restoration project. A new elevator cab is being installed and tourists will not be allowed into the monument until July 31. Over the past three years, at a cost of $10 million, structural damage to the monument has been repaired, its observation windows replaced and its cooling, heating and elevator systems repaired.

At 555 feet 5 1/8 inches (169.29 meters) high, the Washington Monument towers over everything in Washington, DC and is one of the tallest masonry structures in the world. Fifty flags surround the base of the Washington Monument and symbolize the 50 states of the Union. If you take the elevator to the pyramid top, windows in the observation room offer views of the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, and the Capitol building.
Washington himself approved the general site of the monument, as Congress designated that an equestrian statue of the Revolutionary War hero be built in the new capital in 1783. When Washington approved L'Enfant's plan, the memorial was to be situated at the axis between the Capitol and the White House. The actual building is a few yards east of that exact nexus because the ground there proved too marshy.

The Jefferson Memorial The official residence of the President of the United States is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, two blocks north of the Mall near the Washington Monument. It is best viewed from the Ellipse, a large open field behind the White House, or from Lafayette Park in front of the building. (Where various protesters camp.) The White House is no longer open to the public for tours due to security considerations. www.whitehouse.gov
