Washington Monument: United States
built 440 days ago
The Washington Monument prominently displayed in Eakins Oval, was dedicated in 1897. By 1997 it had become evident that the statue was badly in need of structural repair. The large horse and rider casting was not anchored properly, the base was deteriorating and a strange substance was leaching out of the side of the fountain. Under the direction of the Philadelphia Art Commission consultant, Ms. Margo Berg, MPG executed the approved structural stabilization project in time for the 100th anniversary of the monument.

As a scene was being filmed near the Lincoln Memorial, a gentle rain splashed into the Reflecting Pool and a helicopter from real life set down near the Washington Monument. Between takes, the stars nibbled french fries and chatted affably with onlookers. A future episode calls for filming aboard an aircraft carrier at sea. Such realism is one element in the show's appeal, Mr. Bellisario said. Another, he said, is the effort to stay current: a recent episode dealt with the discredited report that the United States military used nerve gas in the Vietnam War.

While there is Arkansas marble in the Washington Monument, the monument is not made entirely of Arkansas marble. Back in the 1830's, when the government was wondering where it was going to get the money to buy the materials to complete the monument, somebody had the bright idea of soliciting donations of building stones from the states and from other sources. In all, 188 stones from around the world were included in the Washington Monument. Arkansas' donation came from this hillside.
