The official dedication of the Washington Monument occurred on the day before George Washington's birthday in 1885. Part of the celebration went into the night and ended with the first display of fireworks to occur on the grounds. However, it was not until October 1888, forty years after the laying of the cornerstone, that the public was officially allowed to ascend the monument.
