The Washington Capitals are a professional ice hockey team based in Washington, D.C. They are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). As an expansion team for the 1974-75 season along with the Kansas City Scouts, the Capitals joined the National Hockey League. The team was owned by Abe Pollin, owner of the NBA's Washington Wizards. Pollin had built the Capital Centre in suburban Landover, Maryland, to house both the Wizards and the Capitals. Being the owner, he laid utmost emphasis on the hiring of Hall of Famer Milt Schmidt as general manager.

Coming into the 2006-07 season preparing for a comeback, Washington Capitals tickets are a sound investment for any hockey fan. Though the Capitals didn’t do the greatest in last year’s standings, finishing second to last in the Eastern Conference, they have made several big deals in the off-season. Led by Head Coach Glen Hanlon, the Caps will step out onto the ice at Verizon Center with a few new tricks that will hopefully take them further up the standings.
WASHINGTON — The Washington Capitals have signed bruising forward Donald Brashear to a one-year contract, the team announced Thursday. Terms of the deal were not released. Brashear, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent, has three goals, three assists and a team-high 72 penalty minutes in 50 games with the Capitals. The 36-year-old will make US$1.1 million this season.

The Washington Capitals may not have the best group of prospects in hockey anymore, but how can you blame them? The team has graduated some awful good talent in the past few years: Jan Bulis, Jaroslav Svejkowsky, Richard Zednik, and Brendan Witt.
From their opening season in 1974 to their division winning campaign in 1999, the Washington Capitals boast a very memorable history. After losing 67 of their first 80 games, and suffering through more years of failure, the Capitals finally established themselves as a competitor in 1982-1983. That season, the Caps made the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Unfortunately, they faced the defending champion New York Islanders in their opening series. Washington lost in four games. In the Caps’ defense, the Islanders held the NHL’s best regular season record and another Stanley Cup.
The Washington Capitals of the NHL’s Southeast Division take to the ice at the MCI Center. There are four other teams in the Division, beginning with the Atlanta Thrashers, who play in Philips Arena, and the Carolina Hurricanes, who play in RBC Center. The last two teams are the Florida Panthers, who call the BankAtlantic Center home, and the Tampa Bay Lightning, who call St. Pete Times Forum home.
