Wasatch Range: Mount Nebo
built 644 days ago
The Wasatch Range forms an impressive backdrop to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, and it is a frequent destination for hikers, backpackers, and skiers. The range is considered to be the westernmost part of the Rocky Mountains, and rises to elevations of approximately 3,600 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level. The abundance of streams and building materials (timber and stone) encouraged the earliest Mormon settlers to establish themselves along the western front of the Wasatch Range. Development of the region still occurs mainly along the western mountain front.
Wasatch Range stretches from near the Idaho border to Mt. Nebo. It consists of a few major canyons, and a lot of minor canyons. Logan Canyon, and American Fork, in Logan, and just north of Provo, are limestone, whereas Big Cottonwood is quartzite, and Little Cottonwood is granite. Superb climbing in all four of these plus Bell's, near SLC, and Rock, near Provo deserve mention.
The Weekend Explorer 3D Salt Lake City Area and Wasatch Range, Uinta Mountains incorporates the updated 3D Views and Fly-through technology. The animated fly-through feature enables you to fly along a trail you have drawn as it winds and climbs to your destination. Intuitive navigation tools make it easy to see hidden valleys, or stand on top of a mountain and get a bird’s eye view of what your surroundings “look” like. You can choose any spot on the map or trail, then zoom and pan to see the view. Resizable split screens make it easy to expand any screen for better viewing.
Spanning a broad range of elevations, the Wasatch Plateau contains a stunning diversity of plant types. On the lower-elevation benches, sage and pinon-juniper forests dominate; mountain brush communities are found slightly higher up the slopes of the area. This community gives way to striking aspen stands as elevation increases. Finally, on the top of the rolling tablelands, wildflower filled meadows give way to stands of Engelmann spruce and sub-alpine fir. Containing many different life zones and ecotones, the area's vegetation supports a diversity of wildlife. Thirty-five years of unregulated grazing after settlement in the 1880s left plant communities in the early successional stages.

Albion Basin would be one of the easiest off-road bike routes in the Wasatch Range if not for a trailhead elevation of nearly 9,000 feet. Consequently, first-time mountain bikers and newcomers to the Wasatch Front will likely feel the constricting effect on their lungs ands shortness of breath that come with high elevation. Don't let this deter you; ride slowly and rest often. Albion Basin is located in the heart of the central Wasatch Range, so pedaling through this magnificent alpine sanctuary far outweighs any discomfort experienced along the way. The route follows the 2-mile, all-weather Albion Basin Summer Road from the base of Alta Ski Area, located at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon, to the national forest's Albion Basin Campground. The road rises gently but steadily and is good for novice bikers who are aclimated to the mountains' thin air.
