Warts: Women

In 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a vaccine that protects against four strains of HPV: two that account for 70 percent of cervical cancers and two that account for 90 percent of genital warts. The vaccine is most effective if administered before any exposure to the virus. It is currently being recommended for girls and women ages 9 to 26. Genital warts can appear on or around the genitals and anus of both men and women. A genital wart often occurs in groups and can be very tiny or can accumulate into large masses on genital tissues. Left untreated, a genital wart may eventually develop a fleshy, cauliflower-like appearance. Genital warts can be serious for females as they can occasionally cause cervical cancer if left untreated.
In women, genital warts begin as small, gritty-feeling growths, which then enlarge and become more frond-like. They can join together so they resemble miniature cauliflowers. Occasionally they are flat, like warts on the fingers. They are not painful, but can feel itchy or vaguely uncomfortable.
Genital warts are caused by Human Papilloma Virus – HPV - and are transmitted through genital contact. HPV is the most common STI in North America. The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 50% of sexually active men and women will acquire the virus during their lifetimes.
The Pregnancy Show The majority of pregnant women with a past history of HPV and genital warts have healthy pregnancies and birthing experiences. However, HPV can be transmitted both before and, possibly, during birth in women who have an active case of genital warts. Moreover, genital warts can hinder a woman’s ability to have a vaginal birth.
Genital warts are an epidermal manifestation attributed to the epidermotropic human papillomavirus (HPV). More than 75 types of double-stranded HPV papovaviruses have been isolated ... far. Many have been linked directly to an increased neoplastic risk in men and women.
