Warts: Treatments

CLICK HERE TO SEE LARGER VIEW Warts around the fingers and nails are definitely a challenge. For finger and toe warts there is a very good, but unusual treatment using 'duct tape'. Apply the tape over the warts for 6 1/2 days per week and give the finger 1/2 day off per week. In kids, the tape often has to be replaced every day, or every other day, etc. The tape needs to be 'occlusive'; it cannot be tape that 'breathes' like in cloth Band-Aids, etc. The tape probably works for two reasons.

Warts are contagious. They can be spread to other parts of the body by picking or scratching. They can ... be spread to other people. Children "catch" them more readily than adults. They do not disappear by "magic treatments" such as rubbing potatoes, aloe, milkweed juice, etc., but some warts disappear spontaneously.
Warts may need no treatment at all, since a large proportion of them (67% over a two-year period) disappear spontaneously. This is particularly so in the case of flat warts. However, a wart that appears unusual in any way should be checked by a physician, as a small proportion can become malignant. Generally, the main criterion for treatment of warts is a cosmetic one, if it is found to be embarrassing by the sufferer, or unpleasant to others.

Warts often disappear without treatment over a period of several months to years. However, since warts can be spread to others or new areas of the body, it is reasonable to treat most people, especially if the warts are bothersome or painful.
Warts don't generally cause any problems, so it's not always necessary to have them removed. Without treatment, it can take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years for a wart to go away. Adoctor might decide to remove a wart if it's painful or interferes with activities because of the discomfort.

Warts don't require treatment, but you may want to treat them for cosmetic purposes and to prevent their spread. Home treatment is often effective in curing warts. Salicylic acid, an over-the-counter medication, or even duct tape and patience may be enough to resolve warts.
