Causes and Risks: Warts are an infectious disease of low infectivity caused by a virus. They may occur anywhere on the body but are frequently seen on the hands, feet, and face (areas of frequent contact). Warts may be named by their location and appearance. On the soles of the feet they are called plantar warts. Around and under the fingernails or toenails they are periungual or subungual warts, respectively. Common warts on the hands, arms, legs, and elsewhere are verrucae vulgaris, but often just called common warts.

Warts are raised, round, and have a rough surface with brown dots. They are often found on the hands. Most warts are painless, but can become irritated when bumped or repeatedly rubbed by clothing. Other warts cause pain because they irritate nerves. Warts that appear on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts. Genital warts in women usually appear on the cervix.

Warts are caused by a viral infection. The virus penetrates through the skin and may often enter through traumatized or damaged skin or areas that are under repetitive stress. Warts are often spread in moist areas which have remnants of infected skin such as locker room floors or the surfaces surrounding swimming pools. Warts can appear on any skin surface. Warts come from the human papilloma virus, or from one of its 48 different subtypes, and enter the skin by direct contact. They thrive in moist environments but can occur anywhere. Once on the skin these viruses develop into nodules, usually gray-colored, benign protuberances that are highly contagious and easily spread by skin contact. Some warts will disappear over time if the immune system recognizes it as a virus and produces an antibody, but this is very rare. Warts are most effectively treated and removed by dermatologists. Warts are found in multiples, do not bleed or itch, and with the exception of the plantar wart on the foot, do not cause pain.

Warts are infections caused by viruses that are present everywhere, making them among the most common of all childhood skin conditions. The culprit will be one of more than 70 types of human papillomaviruses (HPV). They are spread when the virus touches a part of the skin where the outer protective layer is broken, either by minor trauma or by moisture. This happens most commonly on the fingers, elbows, knees, and the bottoms of the feet. Warts on the bottom of the feet are called plantar warts - named for the plantar surface (sole) of the foot.
