Warts: Genital Warts
built 608 days ago
Warts are a type of infection caused by viruses in the human papillomavirus (HPV) family. There are more than 100 types of HPV viruses. Warts can grow on all parts of your body. They can grow on your skin, on the inside of your mouth, on your genitals and on your rectal area. Some types of HPV tend to cause warts on the skin, while other HPV types tend to cause warts on the genitals and rectal area. Some people are more naturally resistant to the HPV viruses and don't seem to get warts as easily as other people.

Warts are common growths that can occur on the hands, face and genital areas of the skin. They often begin as pinhead sized lesions which are initially smooth and shiny. With time, they can enlarge to appear as flesh colored or "dirty brown" like growths. Warts can become fissured, inflamed or tender when manipulated. Patients sometimes complain of discomfort when warts are bumped or scratched, noting that they bleed with minimal trauma.

Warts probably are passed from person to person, sometimes indirectly. The time between the first contact and the time that the warts can be seen is often several months. The risk of catching hand, foot and flat warts is small. Wearing shower thongs, taking proper care of hands and feet can limit the spread of warts. Genital warts seem to be more contagious. It is important to use precautions to limit the spread of genital warts.

Warts, or Verruca, are an overgrowth of skin cells caused by a reaction to a minor, local viral infection. Warts can appear on any body area, but especially the hands, feet, and genitals. Warts most commonly occur during adolescence and early adult life, although all ages are susceptible. Warts are contagious. They can be transmitted from one person to another, from contact with a contaminated surface, or from sexual contact. A person must be susceptible to the wart virus and must have an opening in the outer layer of skin to allow the virus to enter.

Warts can be spread by contact, and the transmission can occur between two people as well as between different parts of the body of the same person. To prevent the spread of the virus, warts should not be scratched. Genital warts are spread by sexual contact.

Chemical treatments--Warts on the genitals may be treated with special chemicals that dissolve the warts. Some of these chemicals, such as podophyllin (brand names: Podocon-25, Podofin) or trichloroacetic acid (brand name: Tri-Chlor), have to be applied by your doctor. Chemicals such as imiquimod cream (brand name: Aldara), podofilox solution (brand name: Condylox) or fluorouracil cream may be applied at home, according to your doctor's instructions. These treatments may have to be repeated weekly until the warts are gone.
