Warts: Feet

Prognosis: Warts are benign growths that often disappear spontaneously within 2 years. They are contagious but of a very low order. Warts may be unsightly or cause discomfort, especially on the feet.

For warts on places such as the hands, feet, or knees, they can be treated with salicylic acid. This is a peeling agent and is available in numerous over-the-counter preparations that can be self-administered.  DuoFilm, Dr. Scholl's Callus remover, or Compound W may be purchased at any pharmacy. After you take a bath or shower, pat your skin dry lightly with a towel. Then put the salicylic acid on your warts. The acid sinks in deeper and works better when applied to damp skin.

Common warts (verrucae vulgaris) are caused by HPV 1, 2, 4, 27, and 29. Generally, they are asymptomatic but sometimes cause mild pain, especially when they are located on a weight-bearing surface such as the bottom of the feet. They are sharply demarcated, rough, round or irregular, firm, and light gray, yellow, brown, or gray-black nodules 2 to 10 mm in diameter. They appear most often on sites subject to trauma (eg, fingers, elbows, knees, face) but may spread elsewhere. Variants of unusual shape (eg, pedunculated or resembling a cauliflower) are most frequent on the head and neck, especially the scalp and beard.

Genital warts (... called condyloma) have become a common and worrisome problem in adults. They tend to be small and flat but can be thin and tall. These are soft, not rough and scaly like other warts. They can occur on the genitalia, within the vagina, on the cervix, on the penis, and around the anus or within the rectum. The HPVs that cause genital warts rarely cause warts of the hands or feet but can cause warts in the mouth. Genital warts have been linked to cancer of the genital area.
Genital warts are caused by a number of different viruses. These viruses are among a group of more than 60 viruses that are called HPV. HPV can cause genital infections other than genital warts. HPV ... causes warts on the hands and feet, though these viruses are not as easily spread.
Most warts are just blemishes, but warts on the feet need prompt medical treatment. Tom Smith, 32, waited a year until one wart grew to a multitude of painful eruptions. For another two years, the Elk Township resident saw a podiatrist who tried everything he knew - two invasive surgeries, acid peeling, injections, and other painful techniques, including an early laser technique called CO2 vaporization. Nothing cured the warts or relieved his excruciating pain.
