Warts: Doctors
built 607 days ago
Warts are usually obvious to the experienced doctor. A biopsy can confirm the diagnosis although it is not commonly required. There are specific tests to type the human papilloma virus although these are not done routinely.

Warts can generally be diagnosed simply by their location and appearance. Your doctor may want to cut into a wart (called a biopsy) to confirm that it is not a corn, callus, or other similar-appearing growth.

Patients and their doctors often struggle to select the best method to remove penis warts effectively. Penis warts are the outward symptoms of a sexually transmitted viral infection called HPV (human papillomavirus) which may include the tissues around the infected area. There is no known cure for HPV. Fifty percent of sexually active men and women will acquire HPV at some point in their lives.

Seborrhoeic warts are much more common than skin cancers such as melanomas, and they are usually easy to recognise. Nevertheless, it is important that a doctor checks any doubtful pigmented lump to make sure that the right diagnosis is made. A very dark seborrhoeic wart can look rather like a melanoma; others can cause worry by becoming inflamed or bleeding. If there is any doubt at all, part of the presumed seborrhoeic wart should be sent to the laboratory for examination under the microscope.

Sometimes, warts can be very hard to see. Also, it can be hard to tell the difference between a wart and normal bumps on the genital area. If someone thinks he or she has warts or have been exposed to HPV, they should go to a doctor or clinic. A doctor or nurse will check more closely and may use a magnifying lens to find smaller warts.

A variety of chemicals are used to eradicate warts. Genital warts respont to a topical resin, podophyllin, applied in strong concentration at regular intervals by the doctor, or a prescription gel (Condylox®) to be used at home. Cantharin, an extract from a blistering beetle, is used alone or in combination with podophyllin to treat warts.
