Common warts are different from moles, and they aren't cancerous. In fact, they're usually harmless and often disappear on their own. But you may find common warts bothersome or embarrassing, and you may want treatment to remove them.

The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), known as the warts virus, is a microscopic virus which invades and infects the skin. Although the virus is very common, it is invisible to the human eye. Because of this, it is very difficult to know if you have HPV unless you see visible signs such as warts on the skin surface, or get medical testing for the virus.

Some people carry HPV, but do not have any warts. In fact 15–40% of people under 40 are carriers of HPV, though it is less common in older people. In most people who carry HPV, it goes away in a year or two.

Regrettably, warts are not the sole preserve of fairy-tale witches and goblins. In fact, they are an extremely common skin condition that can affect anyone at any age. They are contagious but completely harmless, growing on the skin or mucous membranes such as the nostrils. A wart affects only the top layers of the skin (it has not roots, seeds, or branches) and so, in theory, it should be possible to remove it with no more than a little discomfort.
