Genital warts are found in the genital area, around the anus, within the rectum or vagina. They range in color from flesh to gray and often grow together to form cauliflower-like masses and in some cases are too small to see. HPV and genital warts are usually spread by skin to skin contact during intercourse with someone with the virus.

Venereal warts... called condyloma, are a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) that affects the skin or mucous membranes. The virus may cause cauliflower-like fleshy growths in moist areas in and around the sex organs. In many cases, warts are not visible to the naked eye.

A preliminary study reported that the weekly consumption of two to four alcoholic drinks nearly doubled the risk of developing genital warts.1 Those who consumed more than five alcoholic drinks had a more than doubled risk of developing genital warts. A case report of a 19-year-old with a urinary-tract wart found that abstinence from a high intake of pork led to a regression of the wart.2

Providers can treat with a chemical called podophyllin, surgical removal or, in some cases, warts may be "frozen" and removed by a process called cryosurgery. In other cases, providers can order podofilox solution and gel, or imiquimid cream, that the patient applies as prescribed. Several treatment sessions are usually required.

Cryotherapy involves freezing warts with a very cold solution (e.g., sodium nitride) that destroys the virus and causes the wart to turn black and fall off within a few days. This treatment is ineffective in some cases when the solution does not penetrate far enough to completely destroy the virus.
