In 1910, Oland made his motion picture debut, playing John Bunyan in Pilgrim's Progress. Returning to the stage, it was five years later that Oland resumed his film career in Theda Bara's Jewels of the Madonna. Throughout the remainder of Hollywood's silent era, Warner Oland, because of his vaguely Asian features, was often cast in Oriental roles, although he ... played an occasional Caucasian "heavy."
8_warneroland2.jpg No one appears on this list more than Oland. It’s not completely his fault — Hollywood preferred to employ his vaguely exotic features than hire real “Orientals.” But what does it say about our own people when Oland was welcomed in China as a distinguished guest, while Chinese American co-star Anna May Wong was chastised there for creating stereotypes? Oland plays a warlord who rapes Wong’s character and threatens a train full of Westerners.

This probably explains why The Jazz Singer is so late to DVD, but Warner has done itself proud with this package. The three-disc set includes not only a pristine digital transfer of the film, but a bonanza of extras that fully explain the development of sound technology.
