Warm Springs: Warm Springs Wilderness
built 659 days ago
The terrain in Warm Springs Wilderness is extremely rugged. A few old vehicle ways provide hiking routes in some places, but the most commonly used routes are the sand washes which dissect the area. Bighorn sheep and burro trails can often be located and followed on uplands. No formal hiking trails exist in this wilderness unit.

The lands of the Warm Springs Reservation are marked by striking contrasts. The terrain ranges from snowcapped volcanic peaks to high desert plateaus, from dense forests to open rangelands, and from wilderness reserves to industrial complexes. The reservation includes remote glacier-fed lakes and popular hot springs, deep canyons of rushing waters, and long beaches around man-made lakes.
The Warm Springs Wilderness encircles an immense and pristine desert landscape. One thousand feet above the surrounding desert, the 10-mile long Black Mesa dominates the wilderness. Its edges are dissected into a maze of winding canyons. Remnant mesas and isolated hills dot a vast encircling alluvial apron.

The United States Congress designated the Warm Springs Wilderness in 1990 and it now has a total of 112,400 acres. All of the wilderness is in Arizona and is managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
