Producer George Pal, who ... made War of the Worlds and When Worlds Collide, was inspired by the book THE CONQUEST OF SPACE by Willy Ley and Chesley Bonestell to make this film to illustrate life in space. The plot involves the first trip to Mars.

Among other efforts to curb piracy, the producers ... prevented theaters from screening the film at midnight the night of June 29, despite the recent success of midnight screenings of such films as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The producers also chose not to screen the film in any DLP-equipped theaters.

Hollywood screenwriter, producer, and director Oliver Stone will be honored by the Hollywood Film Festival with the "Hollywood Director of the Year Award."
