War in Literature: Vietnam War
built 624 days ago
[Most representations of the Vietnam War in literature and film have been American or European. Vietnamese films and literature on the conflict have rarely been distributed outside Vietnam. During the past two decades... Hong Kong's cinema produced many films which deal directly or indirectly with the conflict. Most Hong Kong commercial representations "resemble their American counterparts with action, rather than verisimilitude, high on the agenda." (leaf 2). Some films indulge in familiar stereotypes. Generally, Hong Kong commercial films tend to view the Vietnamese as totally 'other' and dangerous.

Some of these conferences were sponsored by groups or academic centers with particular interest in the teaching of the Vietnam War. The oldest is the Indochina Institute, at George Mason University. The William Joiner Center, at the University of Massachusetts--Boston, has been active in supporting the teaching of Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Institute has become a major player in this field in recent years. The Center for the Study of American Wars, at Oklahoma State University, is attempting to establish itself as a center of focus on the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. However, the new center of study of the Vietnam War in the country is now the Texas Tech University Center for the Study of the Vietnam Conflict.

Vietnam War - conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. The war began soon after the Geneva Conference provisionally divided (1954) Vietnam at 17° N lat. into the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). It escalated from a Vietnamese civil war into a limited international conflict in which the United States was deeply involved, and did not end, despite peace agreements in 1973, until North Vietnam's successful offensive in 1975 resulted in South Vietnam's collapse and the unification of Vietnam by the North.

[Although blacks were more likely to be drafted, faced discrimination at home and abroad, and made up a disproportionate number of American casualties in Vietnam, “Hollywood Vietnam War films have tended to marginalize their stories…” (p. 38). However, some Vietnam War films can provide a glimmer of the African American Vietnam experience. Analyzes The Green berets, The boys in Company C, Apocalypse now, Platoon and Hamburger Hill.
