Wanda Sykes has been doing standup comedy since the late 1980s. Known for her sharp, edgy wit, she has become a regular on Comedy Central and HBO as both a writer and a performer. In 2003 she starred in Fox Television's short-lived Wanda at Large, and in 2004 she debuted in Wanda Does It on Comedy Central. A book, a standup tour, and various appearances in film and on television ... keep Sykes busy as one of the more popular female comics on the comedy circuit.

The brash and brassy Wanda Sykes had a decade of standup comedy experience behind her when her big break came in 1997, the year Chris Rock asked her to sign on with his new HBO vehicle. She joined the writing team for The Chris Rock Show and stayed there for five years, winning the 1999 Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special along the way. Becoming a field correspondent for HBO's Inside the NFL introduced her to sports fans while appearances in films like Pootie Tang and Down to Earth, both released in 2001, put her on the big screen. In 2003 she had her own hourlong special on Comedy Central, Tongue Untied, and starred in her own Fox network sitcom, Wanda at Large. In the second season, Fox moved the show to the dreaded "Friday night death slot" and it was soon canceled. Sykes' disappointment with Fox was just one of the beefs covered on her standup CD debut, Sick & Tired, which appeared in early 2007.

After Wanda Sykes got her B.S. in marketing at Hampton University in Virginia, she found herself working at the National Security Agency. According to her, "everyone at the NSA has a side job, selling candy or making crafts at their desks" because there's just so much spare time. In 1987, she performed standup for the first time in front of a live audience at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC. Later she would periodically open for Chris Rock. Rock later hired her for a five-year stint writing and appearing on The Chris Rock Show, which earned her an Emmy Award. Decades later she'd appear in forgettable flicks like Pootie Tang (described by Roger Ebert as "not in releasable condition") and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps.
