This bio-pic is the third paring of Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon and this demonstrates MGM's skill in developing first rate vehicles for its leading stars. Who would have thought that the discovery of radium would make for an exciting drama? This necessitates some fictionalization. There is no mention of Marie Curie's political involvement and concern for the fate of her native Poland. However Pidgeon and Garson are interesting to watch on the screen. Though appearing now somewhat tame, it is interesting to note that here is the story of a woman who not only has a career, but ... wins two Nobel Prizes.

Although the 2 films were big successes, Pidgeon was overlooked for his contribution to the films. MGM loaned him out to Fox where he finally had top billing in How "Green Was My Valley" (1941). When he returned to MGM, they tried to give him bigger roles and cast him opposite frequent co-star, Greer Garson. But Greer seemed to come up on top in, Blossom in the Dust (1941) and "Mrs. Miniver" (1942). Although, Pidgeon did receive and Oscar nomination for his role in "Mrs. Miniver."

Raising the biopic to new heights, director Mervyn LeRoy's Oscar-nominated drama stars Greer Garson and Walter Pidgeon as the titular scientist and her French physicist husband. After young Polish student Marie and Dr. Pierre Curie fall in love and marry, the pair sets to work isolating a new element, radium. After years of painstaking research, their efforts pay off, but just as success comes calling, so does tragedy.

Both films won Academy Awards as best pictures and Mr. Pidgeon was nominated for an Academy Award for ''Mrs. Miniver'' he but did not win. He was ... nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Pierre Curie opposite Miss Garson as ''Madame Curie.''
