In this light-hearted western starring Walter Brennan, a corrupt mayor (Edward Andrews) is trying to force his opponent (Ricky Nelson) to drop out of the race. When a group of retired Texas Rangers tries to clean up the town, they quickly learn that they are no match for the mayor's hired guns. They soon figure out they must use their experience and wits to overcome the younger, quicker foes and restore order and democracy to the town.
Growing up under the thumb of their strict father (Oscar winner Walter Brennan), the Matthews children are discouraged from doing anything that could be considered "modern" -- including joining the local 4-H club or dating boys. But when their father's fear of progress ultimately confines him to his bed, it's up to eldest daughter Deborah (Marguerite Chapman) to save their farm from utter ruin. Natalie Wood co-stars.

On his death from emphysema, aged 80, in Oxnard, Brennan was interred in San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Los Angeles. His widow, Ruth, whom he married in 1920, lived to be 99, and is buried next to him. They had a daughter and two sons.
