Walt Disney: Mickey Mouse
built 656 days ago
Disney was an innovator, a perfectionist who was forever attempting to improve his product and explore the medium to its fullest potential. He was the first to utilize sound in animation, in Steamboat Willie, which was the third Mickey Mouse cartoon. The soundtrack here is more than just a gimmick: for example, in an animal concert, a cow's udder is played like a bagpipe and its teeth are transformed into a xylophone. The musical accompaniment ... emerges from the background, becoming an integral element in the film's structure.

In 1923 Disney moved to Hollywood, California. He, his brother Roy O. Disney, and Iwerks began producing short animated films. In 1927 Disney created the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit. A year later he produced another character, a mouse called Mortimer, but shortly after changed the name to Mickey. In 1928 Mickey Mouse starred in the first cartoon featuring synchronized sound, Steamboat Willie, with Disney providing Mickey’s voice.

Besides Mickey Mouse, Disney created such cartoon characters as Donald Duck, Goofy, and Pluto. Winner of a record 30 Academy Awards, he created the first full-length animated feature films, beginning with "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in 1937, and including "Pinocchio" in 1938 and "Bambi" in 1942. He ... made "true-life" adventure films including "Seal Island" in 1948 and "Davy Crockett" in 1955. He also produced the first color television series, "Disney's Wonderful World of Color" beginning in 1961.

With Mickey's popularity growing, Disney's operation was forced to grow to keep up with the demand for more cartoons. Disney ... created the "Silly Symphonies" cartoon series, in which the action on the screen is synchronized to match a pre-recorded sound track, rather than the other way around. The first in the series was "The Skeleton Dance" (1929), and the best-known and most successful was "The Three Little Pigs" (1933). Disney also launched a new cartoon innovation - color - with "Flowers and Trees" (1932), which won Disney his second Academy Award, and his first in the competitive field of Best Cartoon Short.

After giving his dedication for Walt Disney World, he then asked Lillian Disney to join him. As the orchestra played "When You Wish Upon a Star", she stepped up to the podium accompanied by Mickey Mouse. He then said, "Lilly, you knew all of Walt's ideas and hopes as well as anybody; what would Walt think of it [Walt Disney World]?". "I think Walt would have approved," she replied.[41] Roy died from a cerebral hemorrhage on December 20, 1971, the day he was due to open the Disneyland Christmas parade.
