When asked for a name by army officials, she chooses " Ping." The name, though, is a Disney invention it doesn't exist in the original story. Pleading With the Judge Disney showed a copy of the partially completed film to Strand behind closed doors in an effort to convince him it was too late to change it now.

Leonard Maltin, animation historian, film critic, and author, observed, Frank helped to invent animation as an art form and took it to incredible new heights through his work at Disney over four and a half decades. He and his lifelong friend and colleague, Ollie Johnston, had a remarkable gift for explaining and articulating how they did what they did. That's a rare quality in an artist. Even in his nineties, Frank retained a youthful spirit and indomitable sense of humor.

From Variety: The soundtrack to Disney's latest animated effort "Lilo & Stitch" got another bump from film's performance at the box office last week. The Disney/Buena Vista Records [A]lbum jumped five places to 11, boosting sales by 45% to 66,000 units.

Pixar and Disney had disagreements after the production of Toy Story 2. Originally intended as a straight-to-video release (and ... not part of Pixar's three picture deal), the film was eventually upgraded to a theatrical release during production. Pixar demanded that the film then be counted toward the three picture agreement, but Disney refused.

The race here seems to be between "Spirited Away" by the Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki, considered the greatest of all animators, and "Lilo & Stitch," an uncommonly entertaining and original Disney film. Disney is distributing the Miyazaki, but is likely to put its clout behind the film from its own shop. So it's "Lilo & Stitch."
