The original concept was to develop Pooh as a feature-length animated film, but Walt Disney decided to break the film into short featurettes. The Pooh-stories were not as familiar to Americans as they were to the British and Walt believed that Pooh would be much popular if he was allowed to build up an American following.

Walter Elias Disney was the fourth son of Elias Disney, a peripatetic carpenter, farmer, and building contractor, and his wife, Flora Call, who had been a public school teacher. When Walt was little more than an infant, the family moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri, a typical small Midwestern town, which is said to have furnished the inspiration and model for the Main Street, U.S.A., of Disneyland. There Walt began his schooling and first showed a taste and aptitude for drawing and painting with crayons and watercolours.

[T]he Alice series was becoming successful and Walt had his contract renewed this time asking for eighteen more films. But the distributors asked for a reduction in the production costs. Walt decided to reduce Virginia Davis's regular monthly salary to a daily-rate pay. The Davis family refused and Virginia continued her career as a child actress elsewhere. She was replaced by Dawn Paris under the stage name Dawn O'Day(she would later use the stage nameAnne Shirley). But Dawn's payment wasn't enough as the only source of income for her family and she quit too.

The guests chosen through a random process to enjoy a "dream stay" in the Disneyland Dream Suite will be following in the footsteps of Walt Disney. His dedication to the constant growth and development of Disneyland resulted in frequent overnight stays in a small private apartment which remains today above the Fire House on Main Street, U.S.A. In the 1960s, as plans were developed for the New Orleans Square area, Disney brought in illustrator and designer Dorothea Redmond (Gone with the Wind) and set decorator Emile Kuri (Mary Poppins, It's a Wonderful Life) to help him create a larger, more lavish apartment where he could entertain friends, family, VIP guests and dignitaries.

Walt had invited 11,000 people -- press, celebrities, other dignitaries and their families -- to participate in the grand opening. And they came, all right. In fact, 28,154 actually showed up, owing to a large supply of counterfeit tickets. The VIPs included the California governor Goodwin Knight, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Jerry Lewis, Danny Thomas, and many others.
