Wallpaper borders multiply the decorative possibilities. Although they can be used with complementary sidewall papers to add still more personality to a space, they can be great decorating tools when used alone. A striped or all-over patterned border, used vertically, can enliven a painted wall, while a border with a scalloped or free-form edge used along the ceiling edge will create more visual excitement than simple molding. And borders are a wonderfully quick, appealing way to decorate a baby’s room. They’re easy to change, too, so you can go from designs featuring dollhouses and teddy bears to sports cars and mod flowers as the infant grows from toddler to teen.

The use of wallpaper borders is almost as old as wallpaper itself. Borders, originally used to hide the tacks used to hold the wallpaper in position, assumed their own importance by the late 1700s, because they could visually alter a room’s proportions. Border designs featured florals and architectural friezes. Many of these were printed to look like a cornice and hung at a junction of the wall and ceiling to add importance and grandeur to the room. Often, they were used to outline doors and windows or architectural details within the room such as a fireplace.

Do you hate wallpaper borders that repeat the same picture all the way around the room? Have your border tell a story. Use a combination of wallpaper cutouts and hand painted words to create a unique border that welcomes your friends and tells them to make themselves comfortable. Another option is to not have the wallpaper go all around the room. Cut the wallpaper border apart and use it in sections and groupings to decorate over windows and doorways and appliances. You can choose to use the border on an accent wall only.
