Walleye Fishing

Walleye fishing in 2007 should be hot on the upper New River from Fries Dam downstream to Allisonia. The New River walleye fishery has received a lot of attention from the VDGIF over the last several years. In the late 1990's, a cooperative study between VDGIF and Virginia Tech identified a unique native strain of walleye in new River and since that time VDGIF biologists and hatcheries have developed an aggressive stocking program to "boost" the native strain of walleye. Stockings have been very successful and catch rates of walleye from sampling in 2006 are the best on record, and this should translate into increased catch rates for anglers.
Walleye fishing starts the third Saturday in May. The limit with a Sport License is 4 with. Only one Walleye can be over 18.1 inches. With a Conservation License, you are allowed 2 Walleye. These new limits are for all of Northern Ontario. The fish can be filleted but a strip of skin has to be left on the fillet for identification if you are crossing the border back into the States.

Alberta is well known for its huge Northern pike and Walleye fishing. Walleye in the 2-10 lb. range and Northern pike in the 5-25 lb. range are common. In June the spawn is done and the northern pike and walleye bite very well. In the winter months ice-fishing for these great sport fish is an exciting and unique experience.
Walleye can be caught in a variety of ways, including fishing with live bait, lures, jigging or trolling. Use steel leaders to ensure they don't cut your line with their sharp teeth. Small to midsize minnows and worms are usually the most effective bait, jigs can be tipped with live bait or plastic worms. Walleye tend to stay deep in sunny weather, and come shallower in low light conditions such as clouds, rain, dusk and dawn. Try fishing under bridges on sunny days, they often school there too.
The 2007 fishing season for walleye at Philpott Reservoir should be very good. Philpott Reservoir has one of the better walleye populations in Virginia. This fishery does not contain many large fish but does support good numbers. Walleye reach 18 inches at about 2.5 years of age and most male walleye grow very slowly after reaching this size. Female walleye typically grow well for another few years with some achieving larger sizes. A new 18 inch minimum size limit for walleye was initiated on July 1, 2006.
Walleye are ... called walleyed pike, pickerel, jackfish, dore, and ol' marble eyes. The sides of the walleye are olive-green with gold flecks. The spiny dorsal fin lacks spots, but has a black rear base. The lower lobe of the tail has a white tip.
