Regularly seen on film and television, where he is usually cast as a comic character actor, he has pursued a parallel career as a playwright whose work is often dark, politically charged and controversial. He is widely known for his high-pitched nasal voice and slight lisp.
Wallace Shawn had an opinion about those events. He had something to say, but he could not find a place to say it. "Only one opinion was allowed to be printed. The American public were kept in an isolation tank, a kind of silence, where people were not allowed to criticise the prevailing view." And where no dissent could be expressed, Shawn saw people's apparent convictions dissolve under the pressure. This really was how totalitarianism would work, just as he had imagined.
