Wal-Mart: Wal-Mart Workers
built 155 days ago
In Mexico, Wal-Mart is the largest private-sector employer with nearly 150,000 local residents on it's payroll. Wal-Mart de Mexico made net earnings of $1.148 billion in 2006. Apparently that wasn't enough, because the company is now exploiting thousands of Mexican teen workers who work as unpaid "volunteer" baggers. Read more.
Wal-Mart is in no way obligated to give its workers X hours in a week. If an employee cannot work when they are needed, they shouldn’t expect to get as many hours. If any of you WMWers ran a business, would you be willing to let someone work when you didn’t need them?
Ever wonder why Wal-Mart has more workers on Medicaid than any other corporation in America? According to CEO Lee Scott, why should the company provide basic health coverage for employees when, heck, the American taxpayer can pick it up?
More Wal-Mart workers have health insurance today than did a year ago. That’s a good thing. Don’t... look for the popping of Champagne corks and declarations that the era of enlightenment has reached Bentonville.
To counterattack, Wal-Mart's officers, led by chairman Rob Walton, made a strategic decision to bring out their ultimate weapon—the Sam Walton myth—in the hope that this will dazzle and disarm people. The myth has two components. First, Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton (1918-92) is portrayed as a folksy, ol' country boy, concerned about the welfare of his workers. According to this myth, Sam drove around in a pick-up truck, when he could have been chauffeured in a limousine. Mr. Sam, as he liked his underlings to call him, didn't care a hoot about money, but only about following his dream.

Wal-Mart has become much more than just a small corner store in rural America. In the past 10 years, Wal-Mart has grown into the largest retailer in the world -- number 1 among the Fortune 500 -- and is America's largest employer. With more than 1.4 million employees and over $10 billion in profits, Wal-Mart is a giant company with giant responsibilities. First and foremost, Wal-Mart has a responsibility to all Americans to set the standard for customers, workers and communities, and to help build a better America.
