Under the agreement between ShopCast and Wal-Mart Canada, digital displays will be installed in all Wal-Mart Canada stores by the end of 2008. Sixty stores have already been wired and began airing "Lisa" episodes -- which include the central character, her husband, three children and a family. Wal-Mart has not sought a property tax break in Hartford, but the city's housing authority owns the meadow where the store will sit. And the living-wage ordinance covers real estate deals, according to the coalition, which includes the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 371, ACORN and the state Working Families Party, among other organizations. It is a natural campaign to launch, because the unions and community groups advancing living-wage ordinances are usually part of the same crowd that opposes construction of new Wal-Mart stores. Their task is a difficult one: convincing unfriendly city officials to make the mega-retailer abide by the law.

Recently, Wal-Mart became the first major retailer to demand manufacturers use radio frequency identification technology (RFID). The technology uses radio frequencies to transmit data stored on small tags attached to pallets or individual products. RFID tags hold significantly more data than bar codes. During the first eight months of 2005, Wal-Mart experienced a 16 percent drop in out-of-stock merchandise at its RFID-equipped stores, according to a University of Arkansas study (as reported in Fortune Small Business magazine).
On any given day, copious amounts of anti Wal-Mart sentiment circulate in the media. Out of the spotlight, though, is past criticism of the Walton families’ support of school choice. Union detractors have settled on a different strategy and are achieving a certain degree of success influencing public opinion to observe the company in a negative light. Critics would have the populace believe that Wal-Mart depresses wages and eliminates jobs. Apparently one such study undertaken, “by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Urban Economic Development concluded that the proposed West-Side Chicago store likely would yield a net decrease of about 65 jobs after that Wal-Mart opens, as other retailers in the same shopping area lose business.”1 Charges levied at the super centers argue that competition is forced to cut jobs and benefits of unionized workers; producers of American goods move overseas; and competitors are importing more goods. Wal-Mart is vilified for taking advantage of state and local government subsidies of its stores and distribution centers to a tune of $1 billion dollars.
