Wal-Mart sells everything from pharmaceuticals to guns, so no retail sector is safe from its competition. About 60% of sales are non-grocery items. They ... sell petrol as a loss leader to attract people to other products – up to 10 cents/gallon cheaper than independent station owners. This is a classic example of the Wal-Mart strategy to push out smaller more traditional specialised businesses through high volume marketing.

The poll ... found that 56 percent of American adults agreed with the statement - "Wal-Mart was bad for America. It may provide low prices, but these prices come with a high moral and economic cost." In contrast, only 39 percent of American adults agreed with the opposing statement - "I believe Wal-Mart is good for America. It provides low prices and saves consumers money every day."

Wal-Mart and DOL made the deal after DOL investigators found that Wal-Mart had violated child labor laws in dozens of cases across three states. The violations were the worst type imaginable: Wal-Mart had allowed children to operate dangerous machinery, leading to at least one injury. The settlement agreement ostensibly was meant to lay out the steps that Wal-Mart would take to prevent these violations from happening again, but instead it became what I've called a 'sweetheart deal' between the government and the nation's largest private sector employer.

In many rural areas of the United States, the Wal-Mart decision will restrict women's access to emergency contraception. It is likely that more women will not make the necessary time and effort to travel to another town or city to obtain the morning-after pill. Thus, there will be a decrease in the U.S. abortion rate.

"It's one thing for him to have a contractual relationship with Wal-Mart to help them improve their business practices," says Markel Hutchins, 28, an Atlanta activist who blasted the agreement this month in an opinion-page column in The Atlanta Journal Constitution. "But utilizing his civil rights iconic leadership status to defend the business practices of Wal-Mart is another issue."
