DeDe Priest, senior vice president for dry groceries at Wal-Mart, said the company had been urging food suppliers for the last year to embrace organic foods. At a recent conference in Rogers, Ark., near the company's headquarters in Bentonville, she said, "Once we let the companies know we were serious about this and that they needed to take it seriously, they moved pretty fast."

Armed with sales results from past weeks and months, Wal-Mart meets with each of its suppliers to establish sales goals for the coming year. Suppliers are actively encouraged, so to speak, not to miss those goals. A manufacturer that fails to meet its sales target - or has data-documented problems with orders, delivery, restocking or returns - can expect even tougher negotiations in the future from Wal-Mart, which is renowned for its steeliness in such situations.

The big message from Wal-Mart to all of its suppliers was that tagging products will not only benefit Wal-Mart but will have value for them as well. Wal-Mart executives promised that they intend to create a feedback mechanism to share data on the movement of their products that was not available with simple bar code reads.

Scott ... announced that Wal-Mart will launch a major, retail-industry effort to improve social, ethical and environmental standards in the supplier factories that the company sources from. He reminded the managers that Wal- Mart's customers want products that are made in a socially, ethically and environmentally responsible way. The company also recognizes that the challenges related to global sourcing are larger than Wal-Mart and require a larger effort.
