The store ... includes many of the important features Wal-Mart is installing to ensure its stores use less energy and are the industry leader in sustainability. In recent years, Wal-Mart has made a strong commitment to sustainability and the environment and renewing that mission to issues specific to the state of Florida was part of the anniversary announcement.

"At Wal-Mart, we have a long standing commitment to supporting diverse communities through various efforts and initiatives," said Ann Cato, vice president of Corporate People Division Administration for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. and Board of Trustees member for the AICF. "It is an honor for Wal-Mart to partner with the AICF to help provide higher education opportunities for individuals within the Native American community who desire to go beyond the high school level, but may not have the financial means readily available."
In 2005, Wal-Mart had $312.4 billion in sales, more than 6,200 facilities around the world—including 3,800 stores in the United States and 2,800 elsewhere, employing more than 1.6 million "associates" worldwide. Its U.S. presence grew so rapidly that only small pockets of the country remained further than 60 miles (100 km) from the nearest Wal-Mart.[18]
Working Families for Wal-Mart says they are "committed to fostering open and honest dialogue with elected officials, opinion makers and community leaders that conveys the positive contributions of Wal-Mart to working families." Yet there is no public comment system in addition to the absence of by-lines on their weblog, and the front page postings are full of assertions with few citations. The only public contact provided at this point is a Kevin Sheridan who may be the same Kevin Sheridan who once worked for Republican National Committee as a spokesperson. As of April 8 a "Share Your Story" feature had been published to the site. A user could submit a story is left with the impression that it may be published to the web site publicly if they gave permission and if it was chosen. Criteria for what stories would be shared publicly was not posted along with with the submission terms and conditions.

Wal-Mart has discovered the potential of its own Web site in learning more about customers. Ms. Dillman said the site was beginning to allow users to buy a product online and have it delivered to a store near them, an option that Sears, Roebuck and other retailers have had for years. Naturally, some personal information would have to be submitted as part of the transaction. "You can do some association there, what products are of what interest," Mr. Alvarez said.
