Associates who have worked for Wal-Mart since it first opened the doors at the Quincy store joined Governor Crist at the celebration and received special recognition from Wal-Mart's vice president and regional general manager for north Florida, David Norman. The recognition highlighted Wal-Mart's commitment to provide a good job, when and where Floridians need them. And in many cases, these initial hourly jobs become careers as more than two-thirds of management started as hourly associates.

On health care, Scott said that Wal-Mart would begin working with major American employers to help them manage and pay prescription drug claims, a costly task now handled by companies known as pharmacy benefit managers. He estimated Wal-Mart could save companies $100 million in 2008. That is a relatively small sum in the $275 billion annual American drug bill, but Wal-Mart has a history of refashioning nearly every business that it tackles.
